Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is a native to Southeast Asia and from the leaves to the seeds, it is considered a tonic for our health. It has a long history of use in Ayurveda as they offer several health benefits. They have a property to swell in water and are taken after soaking them in water. It has long been used as a popular ingredient in drinks in India and Southeast Asia. 

Good source of minerals

One tbsp of basil seeds are a good source of iron, calcium and magnesium which help fulfil important shortfalls in your diet.

Packed with goodies of fibre

One tbsp provides 7 gms of fibre and pectin, which helps in delaying emptying of the stomach and supports gut health too. Basil seeds contain soluble fibre which may control the sugar, and cholesterol levels.

Flavourless thickener

These pectin rich seeds thicken salad dressings, ice creams etc to get the desired consistency.

Good source of omega 3 fatty acids

One tbsp of basil needs supplies the daily requirement in the form of ALA omega 3 fatty acids.

Can basil seeds be an alternative to Chia Seeds?

They both are nutritionally similar in terms of energy, protein and fat. 

Chia seeds contain a lot more omega 3 fatty acids as compared to basil seeds but a little less fibre.

Basil seeds have more calcium, iron, and magnesium as compared to chia seeds.
