FISH OIL AND INFLAMMATION

FISH OIL AND INFLAMMATION

Inflammation is a natural process of the body which occurs when the body detects the presence of any foreign body or invaders and during the repair process as well. Thankfully, we have various food options around us which help in relieving the symptoms of inflammation.

Fatty fish or fish oil supplements hold an important place when it comes to reducing inflammation. Fish Oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids. These fats are excellent for our body and act as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Chronic inflammation has often been linked to various diseases like diabetes, cancer, hepatitis and chronic kidney diseases. Presence of omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil assists in reducing inflammation, due to the presence of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). When inflammation is triggered in our body, it results in the production of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines which results in symptoms like redness, pain, swelling and joints pain.

EPA and DHA present in Fish Oil help reduce the effect of these inflammatory cytokines, thereby helps reduces the symptoms. Additionally, omega 3 fatty acids also result in the production of resolvins, protectins and maresins. These also act powerfully in suppressing the inflammation. These molecules also promote tissue healing and protect against cellular damage.

Another cause of inflammation in our body is also the imbalance in the ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are good for your body but excess consumption of omega 6 is not recommended. This is because it could also give rise to inflammation in the body. Therefore, omega 3 fats present in fish oil is necessary to maintain an ideal ratio and prevent any inflammation. Fish oil not only reduces inflammation but also reduces the risk of developing diseases like cardiovascular disorders, neurological disorders and certain metabolic diseases.

To conclude, we can say that fatty fishes like sardine, salmon, krill, mackerel and cod are excellent for us when it comes to fighting inflammation. In case of lack of dietary sources, a person can also opt for Fish Oil supplements which are widely available these days. In case of opting for a supplement, make sure to check the omega 3, EPA and DHA content of fish oil capsule. Also, check for the presence of toxicity of heavy metals in the oil. One should refrain from choosing any fish oil supplement which contains heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic.
