FOODS TO NATURALLY CLEANSE OUR COLON

A colon is a part of our large intestine. After the absorption of food in the small intestine, the remains enter our large intestine. The bacteria present in the colon ferment the food, water is absorbed and food is further prepared for elimination.

The colon plays an indispensable role in maintaining our digestive health. Poor colon health is associated with health issues like constipation, diarrhoea and colon cancer. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Among males, it is the third most diagnosed cancer and second among females, across the world. Cases of colon cancer reported per year are about 1.4 million. Therefore, colon cleansing is a healthy practice to maintain optimal health.

It is well-established that our diet should include plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep our digestive system and gut health. But some specific foods are capable of contributing little extra in cleansing our colon.

Probiotics - Probiotics or good bacteria are an excellent way to keep our colon healthy. They help in maintaining microbial balance of the gut, augments nutrients absorption and their bioavailability. Additionally, probiotics also help regulate bowel movements and prevent inflammation. Diet should include foods like yoghurt, curd, buttermilk, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, miso and kefir.

Apples - Apple is rich in a dietary fibre called pectin. This soluble fibre in the apples acts as a perfect natural colon cleanser. It not only helps in detoxification but also prevents elevated blood sugar and cholesterol levels; and strengthens intestinal lining.

Flaxseeds and Chia Seeds - Flaxseeds and chia seeds are rich in omega 3 fatty acids in the form of ALA. They are also an abundant source of dietary fibre. Both dietary fibre and omega 3 content work together in our body in cleansing and detoxifying our colon. Dietary fibre content absorbs water in the colon thereby making our stools soft for easy defecation and reduces the chances of constipation.

Dark Green Leafy Vegetables - Green leafy vegetables like spinach, bathua, mustard leaves and kale are rich in minerals and antioxidants. They protect our body from harmful toxins and assists in their elimination. They are ideal to include in a colon cleansing diet.

Broccoli - Broccoli is another superfood for colon cleansing. It has the potential to detoxify our body. Recent studies have shown that consuming broccoli sprouts also reduces the effect of air pollution and environmental chemicals in our body. Include broccoli in your daily diet in veggies, soups, pasta, noodles, salads, etc. to enjoy its umpteen health benefits.

Garlic - Garlic has been used since ancient times due to its potential health benefits. It is an important part of many delicious recipes. The allicin sulphur-containing compound is well-known for its anti-cancer and cholesterol-lowering properties. But garlic can also be used for colon cleansing. Several types of research believe that high intake of garlic is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

To conclude, colon cleansing helps to flush out unwanted toxins from our body. Consuming plenty of water and including foods which promote colon health in the diet is a convenient and healthy way to keep several indigestion issues at bay. Make sure your body is well-hydrated to prevent dehydration and any electrolytic imbalance. Hence opting for fruits juices, coconut water, birch water and smoothies could prove beneficial. It is easy to cleanse your colon naturally through a diet but if planning to consume any OTC laxatives, it is always better to consult a physician first.
