FOOD MYTHS PEOPLE STILL BELIEVE TO BE TRUE

There are many facts related to foods which people are not aware, along with certain myths due to cultural reasons or limited knowledge. We are here to bust those tricky food myths bringing nutrition facts to life.

Citrus fruits are the best source of vitamin C

Strawberries contain more Vitamin C than oranges (57mg/100g compared to 42mg/100g) on an approximate basis. Even Guavas also provide the same amount of vitamin C.

Fruits should not be eaten after 2 pm

Fruits can be eaten at any time of day. There is no scientific evidence that suggests negative side effects of consuming fruits post 2 pm. So, there is no such defined time to have fruits, so  can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Avoid eggs because of their cholesterol content

Eggs have gotten an unfounded negative reputation because of the presence of cholesterol in the yolk. In a 2018 study for the journal Nutrients, researchers found that eggs don’t contribute to cholesterol if taken in moderation. They are an inexpensive source of various nutrients and a complete protein. Even heart patients can safely consume one whole egg in a day, without worrying about cholesterol.

Spinach is a high source of iron

Spinach is just a source of iron and doesn’t provide it in a large amount.

About 100 grams of raw spinach contains 2.7 mg of iron in the non-heme form, which has poor bioavailability.

Secondly, spinach has such high levels of oxalic acid (anti-nutrient) present in it that binds with iron and reduces its absorption in the gut.

Still, it should be included in our diet as spinach is also rich in vitamin C, which significantly boosts iron absorption.

Papaya to be avoided during pregnancy

Papaya is healthy if taken during pregnancy, provided it is fully ripened. Only raw papaya & jackfruit need to be avoided as it contains latex which might induce uterine contractions.

Avoid dairy if you have cold

It is believed that milk should not be consumed while suffering from cold as it leads to mucus formation, but there are no conclusive studies which prove the same. Also, it might just be a natural sensation which one senses during that time.

Exercise alone can help you lose weight

Exercise is to keep up good health and fasten up your weight loss. But if you are under the notion that you can eat anything of your choice, then you might need to reconsider. If you run for 30 minutes and say you lose 350 calories approximately, and then you eat a chocolate bar, or a carbohydrate/fat loaded breakfast, then again you will neutralise or balance out on calories. Therefore, maintaining a calorie deficit by the end of the day is what makes all the difference.

Tea and coffee should be taken without milk

It is believed that adding milk to your coffee or tea takes away the antioxidants from it. The fact is there is no proven evidence yet which shows that it can reduce the antioxidants in it.

Therefore, it is important to know the facts to keep enjoying your diet the way you used to or improve your diet as per the needs of your body.
